When your child is in a bad mood, could it have something to do with his/her thinking? Chances are YES! How our kids think about what is going on around them has an impact on their behaviors. When kids have unhelpful thinking, it can look like arguing, whining, withdrawal, or just plain mean behaviors. But what if your child knew how to catch his/her thoughts and flip them around to create more positive, respectful ways of interacting? Kids who understand how to direct their thinking are better prepared to thrive in life and overcome challenges. In this course, students get to practice using specific strategies to cultivate healthy thinking habits in a fun, engaging way. This is a key aspect of their social-emotional learning. Students have the opportunity to address and challenge the "stinkin' thinkin'" that holds them back, as well as build helpful thinking habits and positive self-talk. This 4 week FLEX course is inspired by one of my most popular live classes, but allows you to learn on your schedule. With this course, your child will not only learn the skills, but will also have the weekly support from me to implement what was learned in a fun and engaging way. We will use weekly video lessons, activities, and class prompts to develop healthier habits and coping skills. Since this is a FLEX course, we will NOT be meeting live but I am available for questions and to interact with students. The weekly course content will be posted in the classroom at the start of the week, and I will be checking-in to engage in discussion and to support your child's learning. While students may attend on their own schedule, it's helpful to move forward at the weekly pace of the class to allow for discussion and sharing of learning experiences. Students will be encouraged to share their learning through the classroom discussion and using Nearpod (you will be given a link, and it's as simple as that! No need to create an account). Students have the opportunity to watch short teaching videos I've created to learn the new content, and then practice the skills with worksheets, interactive games, and contribute their ideas to the class conversation board. Student are invited to share photos and/or videos describing what they learned. While this class is designed for your child to participate independently, your child will be encouraged to use the skills beyond the classroom and share what he/she is learning with you. I encourage parents to continue using the skills with your child to create a more calm and connected family. Each week we will be learning: Lesson One: What is "Stinkin' Thinkin'" and how is it connected to our feelings? Lesson Two: Types of Stinkin' Thinkin' & Thought Swapping Lesson Three: Developing a Growth Mindset & Identifying Personal Strengths Lesson Four: Learning Effective Problem-Solving to Increase Optimism Developing healthy thinking habits (such as flexible thinking & optimism) is one of the core skills in building a child's resilience. Resilience is the thing that equips kids to navigate the complicated and stressful world and still be able to take advantage of the opportunities available to reach their goals and dreams. I look forward to having your child in class for the next 4 weeks!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving.
I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
