Do you notice your child bump up against the same problems again and again without knowing how to handle it effectively? Or, perhaps s/he reacts impulsively without thinking through the consequences? Kids who understand how to problem-solve well (meaning they can identify the problem & the goal, and evaluate possible solutions) make healthier and wiser choices with their thoughts and behaviors. Problem-solving is one of the core skills in building a child's resilience. Resilience is the thing that equips kids to navigate the complicated and stressful world and still be able to take advantage of the opportunities available to reach their goals and dreams. In this class, students will learn how to be more aware of their reactions to common problems that come up for kids, then practice a specific strategy for effective problem-solving. Students will learn how resilience helps them to overcome challenges, as well as their own unique strengths. Each child will have the opportunity to identify their own personal strengths and consider how they can contribute to their family or community. The class is designed to be interactive so that students have the opportunity to share their ideas in class conversation and activities, or they may choose to observe and reflect using printouts at home. *This is the fifth class in my "Resilient Kids" series. Although each class is helpful on its own, the suggested order is below: 1. Resilient Kids Keep Cool 2. Resilient Kids Grow Gratitude 3. Resilient Kids Stop Stinkin' Thinkin' 4. Resilient Kids Are Talented Talkers and Listeners 5. Resilient Kids Problem Solve Like a CHAMP 6. Resilient Kids Have Standout Sidekicks **If you are interested in enrolling in multiple classes, I offer the series at a bundled rate in my class, "Bounce Back Buddies."

Parental Guidance
I encourage parents to listen in to the lessons or ask your child about what s/he learned so that the skills can be applied as a family for maximum benefit. Because this is a skill-building class, it is not a substitute for individual, group, or family therapy. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like further guidance with the material.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving.
I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
