Resilient Kids Are Talented Talkers & Listeners: Confident Communication Skills
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
Have you noticed your kids yell, whine, beg, or use some other bothersome tactic to try and communicate what they want? Or perhaps you're noticing they're just not responding to your requests at all? You're not alone! The truth is we all need to learn communication skills and practice them before we get it right. The same goes for our kids. When kids are taught strategies for talking and listening in effective ways, their relationships with family and friends become stronger and more connected. Even more, they will be better equipped to problem-solve and/or resolve conflicts with other people so that they can move toward their goals. In this class, students will be taught key communication skills that will help them express themselves in more effective and appropriate ways, even if emotions get high. Also, students will learn the importance of listening with empathy and curiosity. All of these skills will be combined to practice coming up with kid-friendly "I-statements" to clearly, authentically, and respectfully share about an experience. Understanding and applying these skills is critical to strengthening resilience. This lesson is designed to be fun and informative, and taught through interactive discussion, games, and worksheets. Due to the activities and topic, it is expected that students turn their video camera on for class (it improves communication)! *This is the fourth class in my "Resilient Kids" series. Although each class is helpful on its own, the suggested order is below: 1. Resilient Kids Keep Cool 2. Resilient Kids Grow Gratitude 3. Resilient Kids Stop Stinkin' Thinkin' 4. Resilient Kids Are Talented Talkers and Listeners 5. Resilient Kids Problem Solve Like a CHAMP 6. Resilient Kids Have Standout Sidekicks **If you are interested in enrolling in multiple classes, I offer the series at a bundled rate in my class, "Bounce Back Buddies"

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe resilience is a critical trait for anyone working toward being the best they can be, and it is something that can be strengthened like a muscle. I am personally committed to helping build resilient kids, and ultimately resilient families, in my own community and beyond. I have a background as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, most of my work has been as a Resiliency Skills Trainer with a program out of UCLA Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior. In that position, I taught several skill-building workshops with groups of kids (ages 3-13) and adults. I also worked with families individually. I taught the skills of emotion regulation (including healthy thinking styles), communication, goal setting, and problem-solving.
I am excited to bring my background and personal style to Outschool so I can help you accomplish your goals. My approach to teaching resiliency skills with kids is especially unique because I focus on connecting with each child in a way that creates a FUN and ENGAGING learning environment! I can't wait to meet your child and begin learning together!
