In this class we will discuss the process of reproduction from egg to zygote to embryo to fetus to delivery of a baby. In the first part of the class we will talk about what happens when sperm and eggs combine. We will discuss how the fertilized egg cell divides into a clump of cells that implant onto the uterus. We will discuss the significant milestones of fetal development. Methods of delivery and the mother’s pregnancy symptoms will be touched upon, but not in great depth. This class is...
Students will be able to: - Define sperm, egg, fertilization, conception, implantation, zygote, embryo, fetus - Describe the movement of the sperm, egg, and fertilized egg - Understand how a singular sperm fertilizes and egg - Understand the growth of the fertilized egg and the role of the blastocyst - Describe what happens after blastocysts attach to the uterine wall as it relates to hormones - Understand the importance of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) - Define the length of a trimester (first, second, third) - Discuss the milestones of fetal development - Compare and contrast natural (vaginal) birth and C sections - Answer questions via Kahoot quiz about the material covered in class
I am a current Pharm. D (Doctorate of Pharmacy) candidate. I have a Bachelor's degree in Health Science. I have an Associate's degree in Chemistry. I have previously taught biology in a via week long camps during 2 summer breaks.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
I will be explaining that sperm come from males and eggs come from females, but will not be explaining intercourse. Questions related to intercourse will be deferred to parents and will not be answered in class. Please also be advised that miscarriages will be discussed briefly in class. I will mention what miscarriages are and that they usually happen during the first trimester. I will also say that miscarriages often happen because the body recognizes that something is wrong with the embryo’s development and terminates the pregnancy. If there are no further questions from the students this is the depth of knowledge that we will go into in class. Miscarriages can be a difficult subject for parents to discuss with students. So, please be prepared if students have further questions on this topic after class.
