Do you have junk mail or magazines waiting to be recycled? How about a way to use that paper and get the kids creating and having fun? In this one-time lesson for ages 5-8, we will create sculptures from recycled materials, including strips of colorful paper and cardboard. Children will learn about sculptures, and I will demonstrate many ways they can use their paper to construct an imaginary world - will it be a playground, an amusement park, or something else? It’s up to your learner’s imagination. Young artists will make discoveries through observation, guided discussion, and making their artworks. This class allows for plenty of free experimentation and creativity, and each learner’s final product will be different. Younger learners may need an adult’s help in cutting paper strips before class. Class structure: Introductions and class expectations What is a sculpture? Discussion and exploration of our materials View paper construction demonstrations Building the sculptures Sharing artworks Closing thoughts Please let me know if you are interested in different dates or times for this class or my other classes listed. I may be able to accommodate your learner's schedule.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Georgia Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! Thank you for visiting my profile. My name is Valerie Cofer, and I am an art teacher based in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, USA. I am a mother, grandmother, and cat lover. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and pets, watching sci-fi series on TV (Doctor Who and The Mandalorian are favorites), photography, cooking, and being in nature.
I possess a wealth of teaching experience to share. After graduating with a BFA from the University of West Georgia, I embarked on a 15-year career as an art educator. I taught well over 2,000 young artists in my time in the physical classroom. We explored many materials and techniques in my art classes. Since January 2020, I have been enjoying teaching ESL online. Teaching with Outschool combines both worlds, and I’m excited to bring my skills and abilities to the virtual classroom.
My goal is to offer lessons for learners that are full of fun and discovery. I aim to focus less on drawing and formal skills and more on the process and experience of making art. Children have an innate desire to create, regardless of age and skill level. Exploring art helps learners to understand, appreciate, and connect with the world around them. Art is a communication tool and an emotional outlet. Learning in art helps build creativity and problem-solving skills. Above all, making art is fun. I love seeing children discover something new and how each of their solutions is unique. Please let me know if you are interested in enrolling your learner in any of my classes outside of the times they are listed. I may be able to accommodate your schedule. I look forward to seeing your learner in the classroom soon!
