30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Hello, Villagers! In this 30-minute block, students will go through the creative writing process using Minecraft characters, settings, problems, and themes! Whether your learner is a reluctant or confident writer, this class will meet them right where they are! Parents, this is a no-pressure class. As an educator, I understand the challenges that come with reluctant writing. Using my tried and true classroom strategies, I'll guide your child through brainstorming ideas, creating a plan for their stories using a graphic organizer, and getting started writing their stories. My goal in this class is to help your child climb over the "writing overwhelm" hump through a topic they are passionate about. The end result should be a happy child who *might* just give writing another try! Because this class is about a mental shift for your child, I will not be focusing on spelling, handwriting, or the editing process. This is a rough draft, so our focus will simply be on ideas and elaboration. We'll then share our work and end class with a Minecraft "this or that" question! *If your child enjoys this one-time class, he/she may be interested in my ongoing class "The Elementary Writer's Club: Minecraft Edition" where we slow down the writing process to produce final copies of illustrated (optional), larger Minecraft-related stories!*

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm thrilled to have you here in my class. My name is Megan Champion and I'm a 15-year elementary school teacher and a mother of three: My boy/girl twins (8) and my little guy (5). I'm also a proud rescue dog owner of Kepler (1), our Great Pyr mix, and Sadie (14), our tiny Chihuahua mix.
After graduating from the University of Connecticut with my B.A. and my M.A. in Elementary Education and Curriculum & Instruction (respectively) in 2007 (I also have a second M.A. in Reading & Literacy), I began my professional career teaching four years of 6th grade at the elementary level. From there, I went on to teach 5th grade for the last 11 years. I am a teacher of all subjects and all students - not only math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, but I also focus heavily on social and emotional learning in my classroom. Students cannot learn if they don't feel safe and supported, which is why I spend time to get to know my kids on a personal level. Children learn in many different ways, and it's my job to not only find the best, most effective means to instruct them, but to guide them towards understanding who they are as learners, so that they may advocate for themselves in the future.
Finally, as the mother of a neurodivergent child who learns in an "out-of-the-box" way, I know how hard it can be to understand new concepts when presented in only a "traditional" format. Using a variety of methods, I strive to make ALL my students feel comfortable, accepted, and most of all, successful in my class.
