********************************************************************************

In this ongoing class I share an ever-evolving collection of beautiful visual examples, facts, questions, stories & guided discussion to engage learners in explorations of a variety of nature-based topics. We begin class with the questions of “What do you know?” and “What are you wondering?”, followed by "show & tell" in relation to the topics at hand. Please know that while there is no pre-set curriculum for this class I'll always share the weekly topic before we meet so everyone will have time to prepare.

Through these explorations we'll practice literacy, STEM & school readiness skills while learning about a variety of nature topics.

Examples of the skills we'll explore include:

Social-Emotional: Engaging with peers and teacher, taking turns, listening & sharing
Cognitive: learning facts, asking & answering questions, discovering & forming connections, letter & number recognition
Speech & Language: vocabulary, names of plants & animals, discussion, Q & A

Each class includes a printable PDF activity (learners are not required to do these, it's only an invitation to extend their learning if they are interested) and an interactive presentation featuring topics including plants, animals, weather and/or habitats. Some examples of the specific topics we'll explore include flowers, insects, trees, ocean creatures, dinosaurs, nocturnal animals, animal habitats & adaptations (and so much more!).

Since this is a Reggio-inspired class working with an emergent curriculum model, the content I present is guided by the interests of the children. An example of this is covering birds during one week, then extending the exploration to include dinosaurs the next, and volcanoes the week after. *For new sections I will offer themed topics (i.e. colorful animals) for at least the first meeting of the session.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to know what topic we'll cover in the upcoming week.

My teaching style follows the Constructivist approach to Early Childhood Education. “The constructivist approach views children as active participants in their own learning. Education is then much more than rote memorization; instead, it is integrating and assimilating knowledge to be further used and explored. Constructivist strategies seek to ignite a child's curiosity and love of learning.” (Dalcour)

Learners will have the opportunity to interact with all participants through Q & A and guided discussion. Guided discussion is an active learning technique that encourages students to reflect on their own experiences, explore alternative ways of thinking, connect to a topic, and improve analytical skills.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an awareness the diversity of the natural world while engaging in developmentally appropriate learning practices.

Parental Guidance
Please note that for young learners the social-emotional component of any organized learning experience is just as important as the content area being taught. This might look like a child practicing raising their hand for a question, or practicing listening/ staying engaged when others are speaking. I keep these things in mind and gently guide children back to the content area or activity if ever there are any deviations.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
