Reel Talk: Representation in Pop Culture & Entertainment (Social Group)

Reel Talk is one part social group, one part writing class, with a heavy dose of examination and parallel thinking techniques thrown in. In this ongoing class, we'll have some fun ripping apart the stories, songs, and art we love and hate.

Homework
The only homework will progress in some form of artistic expression. Learners will choose for themselves what that piece of expression will be and we will work together to breathe life into it.

Class Experience

Reel Talk is one part social group, one part writing class, with a heavy dose of examination and parallel thinking techniques thrown in. In this ongoing class, we'll have some fun ripping apart the stories, songs, games, and art we love and hate. This is so we can learn to understand an artist's choices, which will help us separate problematic and harmful elements from the stories we want to love. We'll then take that energy and focus on creating something for ourselves.

Topics will range to encompass all races and cultures as we dive into the good and the bad when it comes to representation as well as brainstorm ideas to what can be done better.

This is an ongoing class and every week we'll have a different topic that will lead us into that day's conversation. These topics can range anything from examining a piece of art or pop culture, to discussing tropes, and current events in the world of entertainment.

This will be a focus, but the overall goal of the class remains simple, to make new friends and learn what makes stories so powerful.
Learning Goals
Being a social class there will be some casual social-emotional development happening as we discuss and create art. We'll also be working on developing parallel thinking skills as we move away from us versus them type thinking and push towards assessing and finding the solutions on the things we can control. Also, some light debate techniques will likely be gone over occasionally.

Learners will also learn a whole lot about how certain parts of the entertainment industry works and why certain choices get made.

Parental Guidance
It's safe to say with all the topics we'll be discussing in this class, we'll likely at some point brush upon a sensitive topic or two. These conversations will be handled with understanding and care. We'll maintain focus on the discussion goals and I'll always be sure to guide conversations away from judgmental or offensive rhetoric.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
With over twenty-five working in the entertainment industry, as a producer, writer, and more, I have a great understanding of why Hollywood makes the decisions they do. I also come equipped with a grasp of the philosophies and psychology behind marketing and advertising. Allowing me to pass on insight on the subtext in all things creative.
