Reel Talk: Queer Representation in Pop Culture & Entertainment (Social Group)

Reel Talk is one part social group, one part writing class, with a heavy dose of examination and parallel thinking techniques thrown in. In this ongoing class, we'll have some fun ripping apart the stories, songs, and art we love and hate.

Class Experience

Being a social class there will be some casual social-emotional development happening as we discuss and create art. We'll also be working on developing parallel thinking skills as we move away from us versus them type thinking and push towards assessing and finding the solutions on the things we can control. Also, some light debate techniques will likely be gone over occasionally.

Learners will also learn a whole lot about how certain parts of the entertainment industry works and why certain choices get made.
Hi, I'm Michael and among other titles I am pansexual. Why I said that like I'm in an AA meeting I don't know, but I felt like that information would be relevant considering the class subject. There's a lot of different reasons why I feel I'm suited to teach a class like this. Years of experience in Hollywood, as well as a backbone in communication and social-emotional learning, help me provide insights into creative choices as well as provide a more productive outlet than just venting.

The main reason though I want to offer a class like this is that I've been there. I know the anger and frustration in feeling unseen and unheard, and when I am being represented it's usually as a joke or stereotype. I've been broken by that anger and from those ashes, I learned, and I focused on creating. I created a production company that focuses on creating content for the unrepresented and am currently creating a narrative world for the LGBTQ to call their own. This is just another way for me to help strengthen creative voices while helping Learners dig deeper into the content they absorb every day.
The only homework will progress in some form of artistic expression. Learners will choose for themselves what that piece of expression will be and we will work together to breathe life into it.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Again this class is focused on LGBTQ+ and everything involved with being queer and how it's represented in entertainment. If parents or Learners have any issue with queer culture, this class isn't for you.

There will also likely be conversations dealing with violence, abuse, suicide, and other sensitive topics with the treatment of queer characters and artists. We will express and learn what we need, but not dwell as this class is meant to focus on strengthening the positive perception of queer representation.

About Me

Hi, and welcome to my page.

Here you'll find classes geared towards storytelling and Emotional Intelligence Development, which I've learned pretty much go hand in hand. I've been a writer all my life. It's been the tool that's helped me...
