Recycle-Building: Engineering at Home (Ages 3-6)
What's included
1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
We will begin each class by discussing what it means to build and create, with questions like: -Has anyone ever built something before? What was it? -Have you ever had something you made break? How did you feel? -Who builds big things? Who builds small things? -What do we build things with? Then we will showcase materials we have access to, and talk about their properties, such as: -Physical: size, color, and shape -Mechanical: elasticity, durability, stiffness, and strength We will collectively mess about with our materials and create projects based on suggestions from the learners. Then, we will give feedback to each other and offer suggestions to improve. I will be building alongside the students together, and highlighting strategies I notice them using as they build! The class requires no experience or knowledge, but materials you provide should be as independently accessible as possible. My teaching is inspired by Reggio-Emilia principles, and relies on authenticity and interaction with the learners. I implement a constructivist approach where I encourage the learners to make discoveries for themselves, rather than me pouring knowledge into them. Any way I can connect to them and their interests always makes the learning more fun! They have ample opportunity to interact verbally as well as non-verbally, both with me and one another.
Learning Goals
Students will learn...
-What kinds of material properties can bring their ideas to life
-Heightened spatial reasoning and representational thinking
-Problem solving skills
-Social emotional skills with peer interactions, and handling failure/success
-How to reuse materials to create, rather than throw away

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from University of Colorado - Denver
Hi! I'm Soleil (so-LAY) and I teach a variety of classes here at Outschool, from engineering and coding, to improv and performing basics. I have so many different passions, and love showing kids that they can explore multiple interests, too.
I have been a teacher in various formal and informal roles for several years now, and hold a Master's degree in Learning, Developmental, and Family Sciences with an Early Childhood emphasis. I'm a state certified teacher for birth-6th grade, but I love working with people of all ages!
My classes are student-led and inquiry-driven, and no two are the same for that very reason. I believe in following children, and see myself as a collaborator who scaffolds thinking, not as a directive leader. Any time I can give my students a voice and a chance to lead, I do! I follow Reggio-inspired principles and believe in connecting first and foremost with my students, as well as giving them the opportunity to connect with each other.
I love inspiring new ideas and ways of thinking, and feel so much joy in seeing children grow as makers, thinkers, performers, and creators. I can't wait to see you in class!
