45 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1 hour per week. Students will be expected to practice their belt songs at home between classes. The time required for this will vary from student to student.Assessment
Students will be assessed in class when they are ready to earn their next belt. I will use a simple rubric to determine if they are ready to pass (available upon request). If students are uncomfortable playing alone during class, they are welcome to message me and we can make other arrangements for belt assessments.Class Experience
NOTE: This class is for students who have earned their White, Yellow, and Orange belts (Recorder Karate Basics and Level 1). If unsure of what level to enroll your student in, send me a message! I'm happy to help. This is any ongoing class that students can join at any time - one week after completing Recorder Karate - Level 1. There is no start or stop date. Students will move on level 3 when they have earned their Blue belt. The length of time this takes will vary by student. This class is a pre-requisite for Recorder Karate Level 3. The recorder is a wonderfully easy instrument to learn to play and makes a fantastic introduction to the world of instrumental music. The Recorder Karate method is fun and motivational. As students learn more and more intricate songs, they will earn belts - ultimately reaching the level of Black Belt! Students will progress through 3 levels on their recorder journey (plus the one-time basics class to get them started). Once they've earned the required belts at each level, they can progress to the next. Each level is designed for students to learn at their own pace, yet in a group setting. During class (in levels 1-3) we will review or learn a new concept together as a group. Then we will have opportunities for individual students to earn their belts if they are ready. I will answer questions throughout class and give individual help as needed. During the week, students will practice the songs they are learning for their belts. This class is scheduled for 45 minutes to give each learner sufficient time for individual attention. Class may run shorter if there is low enrollment. Thank you for your understanding. Level 2 Class: In this class, students will earn their Green, Purple, and Blue belts and be ready to advance to level 3! We will learn: New Notes More complex rhythms Good recorder technique Proper tonguing

Teacher expertise and credentials
Music has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. I have played Piano, Cello, and French Horn for over 30 years and am actively involved in playing all three in various groups where I live. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Pacific Lutheran University. I've taught Band, Choir, French Horn, and Elementary Music among other things. Currently, I teach Piano Lessons with over 20 years experience. I also have the privilege of homeschooling my own 3 kids. This is our 7th year, and we love the freedom and family connection it builds.
My goal in teaching music is to help learners discover a love of music and develop their own musical abilities and talents. Everyone can enjoy music - whether playing for fun, or professionally. Maybe it's just singing in the shower, dancing to the radio, or listening to the latest charts. No matter their level of interaction with music, I want to help my learners understand the music that they hear so they can connect with it more deeply. Music is a gift and the more one understands it, the more rich it becomes.
I also enjoy hiking in the beautiful Pacific Northwest where we live. You might find me out on a trail with my family and our cat! She's leash trained and loves hiking with us.
