Recorder for Beginners: Level 1 - Lets play Au Clair De La Lune

A fun, easy to follow class teaching basic recorder notes and a traditional song. This is a simplified arrangement of the tradition French folk song 'Au Clair do la lune' to make the song accessible to beginners.

Class Experience

I believe children learn to play an instrument if they enjoy it and part of that is being able to play a recognisable song. While not essential, learners will benefit from knowing the correct way to hold their recorder and playing techniques to help them get the most from this class - if your learner is a complete beginner they should start with 'Recorder - Getting Started' or 'Recorder for beginners: Level 1 - Lets play your first notes, B A G'

The recorder is a great instrument as an introduction to playing music or for learners who one day would like to play one of the other instruments in the woodwind family.

We will begin with introductions to each other. Then we will listen to the song so all learners are familiar with it.
The students will follow the instruction of the teacher and a colourful on screen presentation to learn how to hold the recorder and play the notes required for today's song. As we learn each note we will practice blowing and begin to hear the tune grow.
Every learner will be heard individually and as a group, so the teacher can be sure that all learners have understood and can complete the tasks.

As the tune builds we will clap the rhythm and learn about the note lengths.
There is no prior knowledge required for this lesson, other than being able to hold the recorder correctly. I just ask that learners come with enthusiasm, a recorder and the ability to listen and take turns when asked.

Please note: playing an instrument can take time and practice. This class will teach the techniques and notes required for the tune. Some learners will have a natural ability, however for most it will take practice after class.
Learning Goals
By the end of this class learners will understand how to hold their recorder and position their fingers correctly. They will know the fingering to be able to play the notes for the song. Learners will have been shown the techniques to be able to play the tune, however it may take more practice after class to perfect these techniques.

Supply List
Learners must have a recorder for this class. A recorder can be bought very inexpensively from most music stores or online stores. I would recommend an Aulos or Yamaha recorder.
The presentation will be posted as a PDF in the classroom after class. Therefore, a printer would be useful but not necessary.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been learning and playing music since I was a small girl. I play piano, flute, saxophone, guitar and of course the recorder. I have played in bands and have also worked in a recording studio where I frequently played on backing tracks for singers. I have taught in English secondary schools for many years covering a wide range of subjects but specialising in music.
Since October 2020 I have been teaching recorder classes here on Outschool with many excellent reviews and repeat enrollments.
