Class Experience
In this flexible schedule class, we will spend 6 weeks learning all you need to know to draw a good portrait on toned paper with charcoal. Experience helps, but is not necessary. Each week I will post reading materials focused on that topic, videos to follow along with for the drawing assignment, and discussion topics in the classroom. The itinerary will be as follows: Week One: Basic Shapes, Form, and Value Scale - We will learn about the importance of basic shapes in art, what form is and how to create it, and how to set up and use a value scale. We will complete a basic shape still life with this knowledge. Week Two: Anatomy and Planes of the Head - We will cover the skeletal and muscular anatomy of the human head, then learn about and complete a planar head drawing. Week Three: Eyes and Ears - The next week focuses on the details of the face and head, beginning with the eyes and ears. We will learn the anatomy and how do draw them correctly. Week Four: Nose, Mouth, and Hair - We will continue focusing on smaller details, this time learning the anatomy of and how to draw the nose, mouth, and hair correctly. Week Five: Portrait, Pt. One - This will begin the first half of our final portrait. We will go through the process step by step, together. Week Six: Portrait, Pt. Two - On this final week, we will finish our portrait to a high degree, and learn about rendering and sealing work. I provide individualized feedback for each drawing. Students are evaluated on their progress, participation, discussion, and assignments.
