US Grade 4 - 7
In this class students will apply their math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals to plan a Thanksgiving meal. Students will shop for food where they will calculate costs of food, how much food they need based on weight and pay for the food applying percentage formulas to calculate sales tax and discounts. Next, students will use real world calculations to transport the food home by applying formulas for area, speed and force. Once the food is home, students will use math skills to convert real Thanksgiving recipes and calculate cooking times for the various dishes being served. The final activity for this class will challenge the students to use logic to determine where everyone sat at the dinner table and what pie they ate by using a variety of clues. The student should have experience adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals and fractions, but does not need to be proficient in the skill as we will work through the problems together. The class will be interactive as the students will be engaged in solving the problems.
