COUPON! USE "SUZANNEREALTALK5" TO GET $5 OFF (CODE EXPIRES 7/6/24)!!!! Based on the popular "Real Talk" classes here on Outschool! More conversational opportunities abound in this class for learners who love to learn. Learners who feel right at home in the library, re-read the same books over and over, do Internet deep-dives, prefer educational videos, try to learn languages on their own, love random facts... this is the class for them! Topics every week will be a surprise. Topics will be pulled from a variety of fields of study and interest. Examples of possible topics and applicable fields of study: -Pidgins and Creoles (linguistics, history, social studies, languages, geography) -Redshift (physics, astronomy, math) -Priming in card tricks (psychology, social sciences) -Spontaneous generation (general science, biology, history, philosophy) -How a child changed hip-hop forever (music, history, social studies, African-American studies, pop culture) -Phonological analysis in linguistics (linguistics, computer sciences, math) -Rayleigh scattering (physics, Earth science, math) -Abigail Adams was a major rebel (history, social studies, American government, women's studies, geography) -Harmony (music, fine arts, math) My teaching style is real, warm, engaging, enthusiastic, empathetic, positive, and inclusive. I love to learn, and love to teach. The well-being of learners is paramount to me, and I work hard to make each learner truly believe in themselves. Since learners excel in different ways, multiple teaching modalities are used, including: lecture, photos, animated .gifs, drawings, text, videos, audio, scripts, gestures. I generate all of my own materials as much as possible, but also use stock photography, animated .gifs from sites like Giphy, and videos from various sites (with credit), but learners DO NOT ACCESS these sites. They stay on Zoom, and they are not directed to go to third-party sites. (In fact, I often say, "Remember, your parents or guardians should know what you're doing on the Internet and who you're messaging, and don't download anything without their permission.")
Learning Goals
Students will learn about a different "mini subject" at each meeting, which broadens their horizons and fields of knowledge, which can provide additional "jumping-off points" for building rapport and embarking on conversations with others. They'll also work on their conversational and social skills while chatting with the teacher and other learners.
