Each 50-minute class will begin with a short bonding time wherein students will share something with the group that is important to them. Next, the class will be presented four animal images, three of which will be real and one will be fiction. The class will work together to determine the animal that is not real and convince me, the teacher, why their opinion is the best answer. The final 45 minutes or so of each class will be a deep dive into the remaining three animals. Each class will include a high ratio of student participation, a slide presentation and a sound effect of the animal when appropriate. The final class will only present two animals to provide enough time for the culminating activity: each student will present their own animal creation to the class. The scope and sequence is as follows: Day 1: Asian Giant Softshell Turtle, Ten Rec, Pangolin Habitats, Prey, Classification, Features, Behavior, Adaptations, Predators Day 2: Fossa, Dumbo Octopus, Sea Pen Habitats, Prey, Classification, Features, Behavior, Adaptations, Predators Day 3: Proboscis Monkey, Saiga Antelope, Hummingbird Hawk Moth Habitats, Prey, Classification, Features, Behavior, Adaptations, Predators Day 4: Thorny Devil, Tufted Deer, Mata Mata Habitats, Prey, Classification, Features, Behavior, Adaptations, Predators Day 5: Orchid Mantis, Giant Isopod Habitats, Prey, Classification, Features, Behavior, Adaptations, Predators Student Animal Creation Presentations
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic animal classification for each animal presented. In addition, students will study animal habitats around the world as they pertain to each animal. Animal features, behavior and adaptations will be discussed during each animal presentation. Predators and prey will be thoroughly learned. By the end of this animal exploration, each student should be able to present their own created animal and discuss each of the following: the animal's classification, features, behavior, adaptations, prey and predators.
