Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this course, students will study and review arithmetic skills they can apply in their personal lives, future careers, and in making wise consumer decisions. This class begins with a review of percentages, ratios, and averages before moving on to occupational topics; it includes details on jobs, wages, and taxes. Then we will go into budgeting, cash purchases buying cars and houses, credit cards, and much more. Students will complete activities such as balancing a checking account, planning a road trip, calculating gas mileage, calculating the amount of paint needed to paint a room, and filling out a tax form.

Students will be provided with notes pages they should have printed out in preparation for class.

An overview of averages, percentages, and ratios
Wages (Hourly and salaried, Timecards, Overtime, and Deductions)
Taxes
Banking
Budgets (monthly, utilities)
Groceries (Meal planning, Unit prices)
Shopping (Dining Out, Tipping, Discounts)
Home Improvements (Painting, Carpeting, Gardening, Fences)
Traveling (Distances, Gas Mileage, Planning a trip)
Loans

Please be sure students are logged into or can log into Google Drive. They do not need their own account but need to be logged in to access and edit the Google files I will share with them during class.

Printed note pages for class
Calculator (can be one on a phone or computer). Plus if it can handle parenthesis and %, but does not need to be a scientific or graphing calculator.
