Class Experience
Prerequisite: Real Life Math (Part 1) This class is the continuation of Real Life Math (Part 1) - Creating a Check Register. In this class, students will learn how to reconcile a check register, learn about checking/savings accounts, and practice maintaining a personal budget and register. This class will be composed of hands-on activities, role playing, story telling and some addition and subtraction. Students will be given an opportunity to create their "Own Life." They will be able to...
Using age-appropriate language, students will learn practical life skills and an awareness of how the world works through a financial point of view. Vocabulary covered in this class will include: -Income / Expenses -Checking / Savings accounts -Bank Statement -Interest -Debit Cards -Budgeting 1. The first lesson will cover a quick review of Part 1. Each student will receive a new career, house, and car. We will talk about opening a checking account, using checks, and debit cards. They will write out checks for their house/car payments. 2. In the second lesson, students are introduced to a savings account. They learn how to record the transactions between two accounts: checking/savings. Students will also learn how to record interest. 3. The third class consists of learning about the process of debit cards. I will use a game to help with understanding. We will also learn how to balance our check registers using a bank statement. (I will only teach how to add checks/debit payments back into the balance when they have not yet cleared. (Uncleared deposits will be covered in Real Life Math - 3). 4. Lesson 4 will be more of a quiz/test. They will each be given a register to fill out and reconcile using a bank statement. This will be done in a game format. Many kids really enjoy this kind of test taking!
Teaching my own children at home, especially with struggling learners, has encouraged me to think "outside the box." I believe that learning occurs when you are enjoying it. Having fun and learning something new simultaneously helps with retention and also builds confidence. I love to see confident students!
Homework will be assigned on the last day of class. Students will be asked to submit their work in order to receive a Certificate of Completion.
I will post the hand-outs required for class a few days before the meeting date.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will give feedback after the last day of class. I welcome ongoing conversation as well.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
