Class experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Learners will discuss real history and science within the context of the science fiction show "Doctor Who".
As well as practicing their social skills such as taking turns, listening, and speaking, they will further cement the historical facts and scientific knowledge that this television show teaches its viewers.
I am a homeschool mother of multiple children. We have always homeschooled and participated in distance education. We came to Outschool in 2018 as learners, and now I am excited to also teach on this platform. I understand the needs of parents of learners here as I am one myself.

I am a native English speaker, and I have degrees, post-graduate, and professional qualifications in the following:

- Law - Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, Admission as a Lawyer;
- TESOL - I have completed 8 out of 8 units towards the 150-hour qualification. When I receive my official professional certificate from Arizona State University I will update this here, it is expected to take up to 8 weeks to arrive;
- Criminology;
- I.T. Security;
- Applied Linguistics;
- Investigative Services;
- Security, Terrorism and Counterterrorism;
- Nursing Science.

I have also completed the following short courses which are relevant to the classes I teach here:

- How Forensic Science should speak to the Court;
- Introduction to Key Constitutional Concepts and Supreme Court Cases (USA);
- An Introduction to American Law (USA);
- English Common Law: Structure and Principles (UK);
- Economic Growth and Distributive Justice;
- Water Supply and Sanitation Policy in Developing Countries;
- Reason and Persuasion: Thinking Through Three Dialogues By Plato;
- Technology and Ethics;
- ADHD: Everyday Strategies for Elementary Students;
- The Clinical Psychology of Children and Young People;
- Everyday Parenting: The ABCs of Child Rearing;
- A Brief History of Humankind.

I am also a HUGE fan of all things Doctor Who, and I even named one of my daughters after Verity Lambert, who was the first producer of Doctor Who in 1963, and without whom we would not have this wonderful program to discuss almost 60 years henceforth! Also, did you know that the theme music was written and composed by a composer from Atherton, Australia? Well, my husband is from Atherton, Australia! I also have a TARDIS dress that I may just wear whilst I'm teaching this class, because I love it and there is not really anywhere else that I can wear it!
Homework Offered
Watch Doctor Who! Please ask your parents or guardians first to make sure that they approve of your viewing choices. We will not be watching any Doctor Who in class.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
What are the similarities and differences between the real events depicted in the story/stories we have discussed? Write a paragraph on each - similarities and differences, so two paragraphs - and share them with the classroom or privately with the teacher if you prefer, OR make a video or audio-only recording of you stating the similarities and differences if you prefer to speak instead of write, and share with the classroom or privately with the teacher if you prefer.
Grades Offered
Watch Doctor Who before class!
Please obtain parental/guardian consent before watching any episodes of Doctor Who.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Please ask your parent's permission before watching Doctor Who as some episodes recommend Parental Guidance.

- The television show Doctor Who may be scary for some viewers.

- It is up to the parent to research the show, and determine if it is appropriate for their learner.

- Some elements of history cover religion, racism, and violence.

- Please familiarise yourself with Doctor Who via the reviews and ratings supplied at:
   https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/doctor-who

- I may screen share Google Slides and YouTube as applicable.
- Learners will not need to access anything on the internet outside of Outschool during these classes.
The teacher will be accessing Doctor Who episodes and researching the facts accordingly, however, students will not be accessing anything outside of Outschool during class.

Students will need to access Doctor Who episodes by whichever means their parents or guardians deem to be suitable.

It is presumed that if learners are enrolling in this class, they are already accessing episodes of Doctor Who and do not need to be provided with source suggestions.
