1 hour per week. Learners and Parents will have the option to practice reading comprehension strategies outside of the classroom via readings posted to the class page each week (on the first class for that week). These readings are optional. However, completing them will further assist the student in their learning.Assessment
At the beginning and end of this class, your learner will receive a Reading Check which is a light assessment I have created to allow me to understand, hear, and rate the level of reading proficiency your student has at the start of class. The same assessment will be given at the end of class to compare results. The assessment consists of 2-3 paragraphs along with 3 comprehension questions that check understanding. Upon completion of both assessments, parents will receive written feedback from me on our next steps and recommendations for further learning. Parent(s)/guardian(s) will receive feedback on their learner's progress in the class. Learners will have time to check in with me throughout the class.Class Experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 8
In this two-week session, learners will learn the skills necessary to become strong and competent readers. Reading is a critical skill for life. This fundamental skill should be nurtured as soon as possible so that learners grow to love reading. Unfortunately, many young learners see reading as a chore or something that is difficult. It doesn't have to be! One of the most challenging tasks for literacy learners is decoding. Decoding is the ability to correctly decipher and identify a word from a string of letters. Students who struggle with decoding are at a disadvantage, but explicit instruction can help them learn this skill. That's where I can help! Learners enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to build stronger reading skills with me through the use of interactive games, activities, video, art, and conversation. Based on where your learner is currently with their reading and writing skills (an assessment will be sent to your inbox when you sign up for the class), I will craft a lesson plan that is individualized and incorporates the goals of both you and your learner. My classes are holistic in nature and communicative. I want all of my learners and their parents to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Making mistakes is part of the journey, and it's Okay! Parent(s)/guardian(s) will receive feedback on their learner's progress in the class. Learners will have time to check in with me throughout the class.
