Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 9
This is a hands-on and interactive course. Students will need access to a printer for the class, have cameras on, and participate in a quiet location to freely share their thinking. Students need to be familiar with fractions, decimals, percents, and negative numbers before enrolling in this class.
This course is for students who have completed at least 7th grade math and are about to take Pre Algebra. This class is a review of 6th and 7th Grade material that is important for algebra understanding.
Throughout the camp, an embedded review of fractions, decimals, and percents will be included in each lesson.
The content of this course will build heavily so it will be important for students to watch the recording if they miss a session.

This course will follow the following schedule:
Day 1: Ratios, Rates, Proportionality
Day 2: Writing Equations involving Ratios, Rates, and Proportions
Day 3: Word Problems involving non-proportional relationships
Day 4: Writing nonproportional equations

I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think

I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.

I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
