This class is taught in English.
Students will learn and read along to non-fiction about the real-life animals of Minecraft. The class will use the science concepts created by Dr. John Guthrie for his Concept-Oriented Reading Instructional Program. The goal is for students to explore the concepts/themes of animal locomotion, predation/feeding, respiration, communication, defense, and adoption to habit. The best thing is students can use these concepts/themes to anchor their knowledge of all animals, not just animals in Minecraft universe.
I worked on the Concept Oriented Reading Science 13 million dollar grant under the direction of Dr. Guthire. I published the co-authored the chapter Reading Comprehension for Information Text: Theoretical Meanings, Developmental Patterns, and Benchmarks for Instruction in the book Motivating Reading Comprehension: Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction.
