In my 20 years of teaching these two short stories have always been one of my favorite. Students love them and can learn so much from them. This class invites students to discover the beauty and depth of Sandra Cisneros' short stories. Through an exploration of "Eleven" and "Salvador Late or Early", students will delve into themes of identity, resilience, and social awareness. By examining Cisneros' vivid imagery and figurative language, students will learn to uncover layers of meaning and develop critical reading and writing skills. The course fosters creativity and empathy, encouraging students to connect literature to their own experiences and express their insights through thoughtful discussions and reflective writing.
Learning Goals
Explore Themes of Childhood & Growth
Analyze the emotional complexities of childhood as seen in both stories, focusing on moments of growth, confusion, and realization.
Character Analysis
Study the main characters (Rachel in Eleven and Salvador in Salvador Late or Early) and their struggles with identity, responsibility, and perception.
