What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one off course students will engage in a meeting to discuss prior knowledge on scanning texts for information and this will then set where I will start my teaching of the new skill in this workshop and the level of detail we will go into. Each course and the students abilities in it will differ from course to course, therefore because my approach to teaching is to cater for all students needs as best as possible, not every course will be the exact same but will follow the same content. During the live meeting we will read a text together and go over the strategies to use when looking for information in the text to answer questions (eye movement, skimming words, understanding the question, scanning for key words). We will then discuss and come up with appropriate answers to the questions using the information we have found in the text. After the live meeting students will complete a homework task to practise there newly learnt skills independently (There is a text to read in this and it's level recommendation is three years at school and up, although this is only a recommendation and will be very dependent on your child's reading ability, if the text is a little hard you may wish to read it with them). Students will go through the same process learnt in the lesson to complete homework which will be submitted to be marked for feedback.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to locate specific information in a text they have read to answer questions in regards to what has happened in that text.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there I am a teacher from New Zealand. I have been working as a primary school teacher for the past two years and am now into my third year. Before teaching I was studying at the University of Canterbury here in New Zealand, where I first completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology and then moved on to complete my Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary).
I am very excited to be apart of Outschool where I will be able to help assist families continue there children's learning from home, building the skills to be life long learners.
No one child learns the exact same as another, therefore I have designed the majority of my courses to be open ended and up for personal interpretation. Children will be able to complete these course over a number of weeks were they can set aside as much or as little time as needed to complete tasks and activities, encouraging children to be leaders of their own learning. There will be no wrong or right ways to complete such tasks and activities as we all have our own ways we learn best. I will be following a Learn, Create, Share style of teaching where children will take what they have learnt through these courses and create something of their choice (video, movie, blog post, play, crossword, comic, news report, song, stop-motion, letter, poster, to name a few) to show their new learning, which will then be shared back with the other children within the course.
Through part-taking in my open ended courses children will go on their own individual learning journeys by inquiring into topics of interest. My role as the teacher will be to take the individual interests of each child and guide them through how it will fit into the subject I am teaching, whether it be reading, science, art, maths, writing, etc.
I also have a range of essential skill building workshops I will run for reading, writing and maths. These will be one off lessons with follow up tasks for children to continuing building and practising these essential skills.
