Class Experience
US Grade Preschool - 12
**Learners are to come to class with at least two books that they have read before, and at least one book that they have not read before, that are at their reading level.** I ask learners to bring their own books so that learners bring material they enjoy. I want learners to be happy about reading the books that they chose. This will also help them continue to practice reading the book after the class is over. If it is a series, this can help them think about how to read the rest of the series. Learners will practice reading out loud to improve their intonation, expression, good enunciation, and voice. We will discuss what words we can play with to help listeners understand the emotions of the sentence. For example, if we have the sentence "I am so mad", we can stretch out the word "so", to make the effect of mad stronger. Learners will learn to read and speak clearly with good fluency. We will practice choosing when to take pauses and breaths when to pause for dramatic effect or to let the audience think about what was just read. We will cover pronunciation and definitions as needed, however, I will not be correcting pronunciation unless the learner requests assistance. The goal is for the learner to want to read. Much like when libraries have "read to a dog" events. All reading levels are welcome, as the learners will be reading from their own text, not assigned texts. I will read some from a text to lead by example, then the learners will practice reading. Much of the time, we will only read a short passage from the chosen book, as we will be reading the passage multiple times. Learners may turn off their camera when reading if they are feeling particularly shy, however, it is discouraged, because we can "hear" a lot by watching facial expressions. Body language and visual cues tell a large part of the story. Learners may take this class multiple times, as many times as desired. Every class builds upon the learner's current ability. Please bring the previous book we read together, plus new books.
