📚 How is this class different from the 45 min reading tutoring? 📚 The biggest difference is, of course, that this class is only 30 minutes long. It is not recommended for students who are only taking one class a week. My recommendation is for those children that need intensive reading help or intervention to take several shorter tutoring classes, rather than one 45 minute class (3-4 a week). Several shorter lessons can be beneficial for struggling students, as they keep their focus better. Research shows that breaking down the learning material into several shorter lessons leads to better information retention and a lower cognitive load. 📚 What will be taught? 📚 As with all of my lessons, no two private lessons will be the same. My lessons are tailored to the independent learner. I believe in focus, personalized instruction. While group classes are wonderful, there are some learners that thrive in a 1-on-1 environment. The goal of my private lessons is to make the learner feel great about what they have accomplished and ready to learn more. 📚 What topics will you cover? 📚 The exact topics taught in each lesson will differ depending on the student. Once I have evaluated the learners’ reading fluency, comprehension skills, vocabulary knowledge, and phonemic awareness, we will set goals. A few examples of these goals are to improve reading speed and accuracy, enhance comprehension abilities, expand vocabulary, and work on pronunciation and expression. A few strategies I like to use include decoding techniques, context clues, summarization, and questioning. I also like to engage in guided reading, shared reading, and engaging reading games that promote vocabulary and comprehension skills. 📚 How is your class structured? 📚 In these private lessons, the entire 30 minutes is used to encourage and foster learning. We will always start with introductions and getting to know one another. Towards the end of our lesson, we will play educational games that aid in the production of whichever skills we are focusing on. Before signing off, I like to recap what was learned. 📚 How will you teach? 📚 When I teach, I am very enthusiastic with learners. I want them to enjoy what we are doing. Through the years of working with different ages and different learnings styles, I have developed an approach that aims to teach without the students feeling like they are in an academic lesson. This helps with motivation!

One thing that makes me stand out is that I do not only have relevant training in this area, but I also have lived experience. While training is amazing, it does not cover every issue or topic that could arise in sessions. My lived experience gives me approaches that work with many different students from multiple different backgrounds. I have done reading intervention for students virtually, in person, and in group sessions. As explained earlier, I have also used it with my own children.
