US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Is your child a struggling or beginning reader? Do they need support with phonics to help them decode tricky words? Look no further, I can help! As noted in my teacher bio, I have a strong background in teaching reading. It is truly my passion and beware I love being silly with my students, so I hope they are ready for my pre-recorded silly videos! :) During the next four weeks your child will be exposed and taught eight vowel teams: ai/ay, ee/ea, oi/oy and oa/ow. I will devote an entire week to each vowel team chunk (week 1: ai/ay, week 2: ee/ea, week 3: oi/oy, week 4: oa/ow) This is a FLEX class meaning there are no live sessions with me but each week your child will have access to a pre-recorded video where I will instruct your child on how to apply the phonics skill to tricky words. I will use my high energy to engage your kiddo. :) Each Week you will have access to: *A pre-recorded video of me introducing the specific chunk/vowel team using a fun slide-show format. During the video I will read through our 'chunk chart;' narrow in on the specific vowel teams; decode tricky words that we will find in an upcoming story; and model how to read a story together using our new reading strategy/chunks. *A quick pre-recorded bonus video of me introducing a sight word song to your kiddo from my popular sight word classes. Learning sight words are a HUGE part of learning how to read! :) *PDF of book read in the pre-recorded video for your child to practice reading at home. *PDF of an additional decodable book with the selected vowel teams in them. (if the book is too tricky, please have them go on an AI AY chunk hunt and highlight the vowel teams in the words; next practice tapping each word out) *PDF printable of word & picture sorts using the vowel teams. *Nearpod lesson to enhance understanding of the phonics skill. (link will be provided) *PDF printable of vowel team word flashcards. *YouTube links to phonics songs using the selected vowel teams. *Kahoot game! As noted above, each week your child will have a abundance of resources to use at their own pace to enhance their understanding of using phonics to decode tricky words. They can access my videos and resources at any time throughout the week. Although not required, if you have access to a printer to print off the various resources provided, that will benefit your learner. If you do not, please reach out prior to enrolling and I can chat with you about different options. :) In addition to student independent work, every week your child will have the opportunity to interact with their peers by: *Playing a game of Kahoot every Friday to assess their knowledge of the phonics skill taught that week. *Your child will also have the opportunity to record themselves reading one of the decodable books to their classmates (and I) via the Outschool Classroom. Students will have the opportunity to leave comments to one another on their awesome reading skills! I look forward to hearing them read! Come on, what are you waiting for? Let's read and learn with Chunky Monkey & help grow your child into a confident reader! ***Please note if you are looking for specific skills for your child, please let me know and I can work on putting together a different class. I will eventually offer my live tutoring classes again soon too! :) Stay tuned! In the meantime, feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. :)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm back!!! I took a break from Outschool but I am slowly adding some tutoring times back in for a few new 2023 summer learners! :)
For the past 21 years, I have been a licensed elementary teacher. In 2002 I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and am currently teaching first grade. In 2018, I was awarded Teacher of the Year by my school and then received the 2018-2019 Corporation Teacher of the Year. Throughout my time as a teacher, I have mentored other teachers, served on numerous committees, developed curriculum, coached cheerleading and track, directed talent shows, supervised summer reading programs, and tutored countless students in reading. In addition to my classroom experiences, I am an online teacher where I instruct children in China how to read and speak English.
My passion is teaching reading. Having been trained in both Reading Recovery and Title I, I am able to offer a wide scope of reading skills both to my students in the classroom and virtually. Being a former cheerleader, dancer, and aerobics instructor, I come with high energy. My cheerleading style to teach sight words and other reading skills is what makes me unique. I create my own songs and chants. Teaching through song and movement help cement student learning, which in turn molds children into above proficient readers. I firmly believe that students learn best when they are engaged. There’s no better way to engage students than with a dynamic atmosphere where children are encouraged to move and groove while learning!
Outside of the classroom, I am a busy mom of three amazing kiddos and three furbabies. My husband is also a teacher. We value the importance of education. As a family, we enjoy being outdoors and escaping to the mountains when we can. My favorite thing to do is to be around the ones I love, this includes my students. I hope I get the chance to bring a smile or two to your child’s face in the Outschool classroom. :)
