Class Experience

Join me as I read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen! This class is part of my Reading the Classics series, a read aloud series for teens. I believe that children of all ages, not just little ones, benefit from being read to!

I will spend the majority of each class reading aloud. After each class, students will be expected to read several chapters on their own before the next class. At the beginning of each class, we will discuss the chapters they read on their own, then I will read as much as I can aloud for the remainder of class. I have found that students have an easier time getting into those intimidating classics if they have someone helping them along!

I will not be asking the students to read, instead I will be doing the reading. I do this so that students who are shy, have social anxiety, have dyslexia, or otherwise do not feel comfortable reading aloud, can still participate in a book study without the pressures some feel in that environment.

Students need their own copy of the book so that they can follow along during class and complete the assigned out of class reading, but this book is easy to find used at reasonable prices. This book is also available for free on the Project Gutenberg website. No reading needs to be done prior to the first class, but will be assigned at the end of each class to be completed before the next meeting.

Parental Guidance
Because we are reading classic literature that was written in a very different time period, the likelihood of coming across something that would not be acceptable in today's literature is high. Many classic novels contain sexism, racism, or other issues that students may not be used to reading. Any time we are reading a novel that contains these issues, I will stop reading and discuss what is wrong about what we read and why we no longer accept that idea or language. Instead of censoring classic literature, I use it as a teaching tool to help students see how much has changed since it was written, as well as how far we still need to go.
Supply List
Students will need their own copy of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Students can purchase or borrow a copy or they can access a free copy on the Project Gutenberg website.
