Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Teaching phonemic awareness to young readers means helping them become aware of the individual sounds in words. This is an integral skill in early literacy and helps build a foundation for success in reading!
In this weekly, 25 minute class, learners will engage in activities following the pattern of Heggerty's Phonemic Awareness Curriculum. Each lesson will follow the same routine but be a little bit different from the last, using different sound combinations, words, and sentence examples, so learners are welcome to join any session one or more times each week. We will practice in each of the following ares:
Syllable counting - breaking a word into individual syllables
Sentence segmenting - counting individual words in a spoken sentence
Rhyming - identifying words that end the same as a given word
Phoneme blending - combining sounds to form a word
Phoneme segmentation - breaking a word into individual sounds
Phoneme manipulation - Say "cat". Now change "c" to "h".

With this fun and engaging class your learner will begin to crack the phonemic code and become a Reading SuperStar!
