Class Experience

Students will be taught five practical strategies to help them read early reader books independently and to think of reading in a more meaningful way.
They will learn step by step strategies to help them read new early reader books and approach tricky words that they might now know.
We will practice these strategies using early reader books from eBooks by Clark Ness together and then each student will get a chance to try out these reading strategies individually.
I like to approach my lesson in a fun and welcoming way. Through using practical guided reading techniques, I hope to equip early readers with the tools to empower them to expand their reading skills.
Students attending this class must have a knowledge of the alphabet and understand how to read three and four letter words and high frequency words.

Learning Goals

Students will learn and practice five reading strategies to help them read early reader books independently. They will be able to use these strategies and apply them to all kinds of early reader books and beyond.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My class will focus on how to become super readers and building your reading skills.
I am a teacher with an Education degree in English language arts and English as an Additional Language. I have taught for over twenty years both in Canada and at several accredited international schools.
I believe that reading can be fun and a real pleasure but we haven't always been introduced to reading the correct way. Many of us were just given a book and expected to "just read". But reading is so much more. It can unlock the door to other worlds, ways of expression and new skills.
I enjoy reading and have always been a voracious reader since I was young. I remember my teacher actually ordering me to not read ahead in our novel studies because I would want to keep on going.
I would like my students to be just as engaged in reading as I was.
