This reading and spelling course uses a reading system that is simultaneously multi-sensory, systematic, and cumulative, with direct and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness. This course will offer ongoing instructional sessions using the "Barton Reading and Spelling System," which is a scientifically researched, multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and spelling. I am a certified Barton tutor with over 15 years of experience helping struggling readers achieve their full reading and spelling potential with the Barton Reading and Spelling System.

Assessment
Frequency: includedDetails: There will be an in-class post-assessment given at the end of each level to ensure the student has mastered the material. The student will advance to the next level in the program once a passing score on the post-assessment is achieved.
This program was designed for dyslexia or struggling readers, using the Orton-Gillingham approach. It includes systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, reading fluency, spelling, and spelling rules.
(1) A regular laptop or desktop computer is needed. iPads (or other tablets) and Google Chromebooks will not work for the mouse/keyboard control tools used in this class. (2) A webcam (internal or external) is essential for this course. (3) A mouse for manipulating onscreen tiles or a touchscreen computer is needed for this course. (4) A headset with a microphone on the headphones (not the cord) is highly recommended and preferred so that both the student and the teacher can hear the sounds the other makes clearly and precisely. *****(5) This class is very interactive and your student will be doing most of the work via a mouse or keyboard. A student should have basic knowledge of how to use a mouse (drag and drop) and a keyboard. The student does not need to be proficient at typing. The hunt-and-peck approach works fine but the student should know the basics like how to hit enter, create capital letters, and insert punctuation.*****
