Deductive reasoning (with respect to critical reading comprehension) is the process of drawing a logical conclusion based on information provided (facts, evidence etc.). In this club, learners will get targeted practice with deductive reasoning and, more specifically, with drawing conclusions from information that they will read in a series of short science passages. Various science topics will be presented in these reading passages, ranging from Earth & Space, Engineering & Technology, Physics, Chemistry to Life Sciences (biology, zoology, ecology & environment, physiology, geology, oceanography, etc.). A typical session will look like this: Each week, learners will read several different non-fiction short reading passages in science. After discussing and clarifying the information learned (including new vocabulary words), they will practice, under my guidance, critical thinking strategies to answer deductive reasoning questions, typically in multiple-choice format. Learners will be given a minute to think and then be encouraged to submit their answer. We will then discuss the correct answer (and why others are incorrect). More specifically, I will explain how the correct answer was reached through the analysis of the information provided. Please note: I will encourage learners to participate in our discussions, ask questions, volunteer to read a passage out-loud, and share their answers. However, I will not pressure anyone to do so. I strive to make sessions a place where each child feels comfortable, welcome, and included. Learning takes many forms and I understand that some learners prefer to keep a low-profile and/or learn by observation. If your child is shy, self-conscious about speaking, or prefers to not submit their answers, please let me know in advance by communicating with me, just so that I am aware of your child’s needs. This club is recommended for learners in grades 4 and 5 (ages 9-11). However, this is meant as a guide only and your child may find the level either too difficult or too easy. If you feel that the level of challenge is too difficult for your child, I recommend my other club which is similar, but with a lower level of challenge (Club Title: Read and Think like a Detective: Decoding Clues and Drawing Conclusions). I will also contact parents if I feel that a child is either struggling or not challenged enough with this club level.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Psychology from Concordia University
I have been teaching critical reading comprehension with a focus on deductive reasoning for over 6 years to numerous students in grades 4 and 5 . In this club, I am presenting a curated selection of science passages and questions that provide the best overall learning experience and improved results for learners. For instance, the passages describe interesting and fun science facts which stimulate discussions and curiosity.
