Do you have a beginner reader who is ready to develop or strengthen their phonemic awareness? Word patterns, or word families, help readers recognize words in text and how to sound out other words with similar patterns. This class is designed to teach your learner those word patterns to help them become proficient readers. Each week, learners will meet as part of an ongoing class. This means you can join in at any time as a new word family is taught each week. Please see the list below of the word and/or letter sorting topics. There are a total of 20 word study lessons and then the cycle will restart. No matter when you join, your learner will have fun reading, spelling, and writing our words! For each word family, I will provide word cards and picture cards for each family to print. These will be used in our class as part of word study activities: sorting, writing, matching (pictures to words). During our class, we will practice segmenting and blending words which is key to developing strong readers! Learners will be able to manipulate letter sounds to change words (example: mat to rat or jet to net). It is important that your learner has mastered all letter sounds to successfully participate in our class. Words covered will be CVC words as well as digraphs and blends. Please see list of word families in the course schedule. Your beginning reader will learn to read and write our words through a variety of activities and practice. Please have them bring along a pencil, paper (preferably lined paper), and coloring supplies. So why learn about word families? * enables students to recognize patterns in other words * helps students decode words * equips students with strategies to learn new words After class, I will send a follow up activity, worksheet, or other assignment that families can you to reinforced the taught skill. It is an optional activity and I am happy to check your learner's work after completing the activity. I hope you will come have fun with phonics!
