Class Experience This 50 minute class will be taught focusing on one literacy skill for reading comprehension as well as practicing that skill with their writing. Responding to a text is something that improves with practice and exposure to texts. The reason reading and writing should be taught together is so that the reading comprehension skill is reinforced in their writing when students get a chance to practice that same reading skill right in the moment and become the author. In this class students will see that there are many reasons for writing and that writing has different criteria. Lesson Outline *read a short passage together and discuss aloud *answer questions orally with the group *use the organizer that addresses a common reading comprehension skill to guide our discussions *use another organizer with this same skill and brainstorm ideas to practice the reading skill *students complete the organizer with teacher guidance and discussion *share out any final thoughts CALENDAR of LITERACY SKILLS: Week 1 Inference Week 2: Main Idea-Supporting Details-Summarize Week 3: Explain Informational Text & Academic or Domain-Specific Words and Phrases Week 4 : Text Structures and Features & Interpret Information- Charts and Graphs CCSS 5: Firsthand and Secondhand Accounts CCSS 6: Author’s Reasons and Text Evidence & Integrate Information from Two Texts
