Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
After reaching out to the Heggerty company and receiving permission, I am pleased to be able to offer these lessons on Outschool. This class is for kids who have demonstrated a need for phonemic awareness improvement. You may request a private assessment first if you like. The format of this class is all auditory, with visual prompts if needed. The student will listen-and-respond as we cover ten reading readiness skills in each lesson using many words. The student will practice these skills: rhyme, onset, blend, isolate, segment, delete and substitute. We will also practice letter-sound knowledge (I will show flashcards) and language awareness using nursery rhymes.

We will use the modified schedule that Heggerty recommends when starting in the middle of the year. The program will be 21 weeks long. I will list it in segments of seven weeks.

We start with phonological awareness (words and syllables) and start getting into phonemic awareness (individual sounds) in week nine.

Weeks 4-7 we will be practicing medial and final phonemes and blending three, four or more-phoneme words plus reviewing skills introduced earlier.

Weeks 8-21 stay tuned for "Reading Readiness: Daily Phonemic Awareness Parts 2 and 3" where we will introduce consonant blends and digraphs.

The lessons are fast-paced but the progress is slow because there is a lot of repetition. Phonemic awareness is learned by lots of practice and repetition.

There are ten skills taught in each lesson: rhyming, onset fluency, blending, isolating final or medial phonemes, segmenting, adding, deleting, substituting, alphabet knowledge, and language awareness. Each Heggerty lesson will typically take about fifteen minutes (longer if the students are struggling). For the last five minutes we may practice sequencing sounds (repeating three sounds in a row, helps with auditory memory and discrimination), and reinforcing sound awareness with games on Wordwall.com.

Hi everyone! I'm very thankful to be added to this wonderful group of amazing teachers and super students! I'm a homeschool mom + reading specialist + ESL teacher. We have 8 kids ages 14-29 so homeschooling has been part of my life for a long time. I found out early on that my favorite thing to teach is reading. It's such an important skill! I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System for most of the reading teaching that I do. More recently I have discovered teaching English online. I thoroughly enjoy teaching children in China to speak our beautiful language. I'm so excited to have found a fantastic ESL program called Off2Class that I can use with kids on Outschool.
I have a Bachelor's degree in sociology and education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. I've been teaching in a variety of settings ever since. This includes homeschool (pre-k through 12th grade), children's programs at church, two private Christian schools, private tutoring business and online ESL (VIPKid).
I love seeing kids smile during class and I understand the importance of student engagement and participation in the learning process. I will provide lots of opportunities for your student to interact with me and the learning materials. Let's have a great time improving reading and English skills!
