Class Experience

In this ongoing course, children will practice 6 pre-reading skills. These skills include: phonological awareness, letter knowledge, beginning writing, oral language and print awareness (including beginning to read sight words). We will focus on one letter per week. We will develop pre-reading skills by singing, interacting with classmates, flannel board activities and playing games. Every Wednesday I will ask children to draw or show their classmates an item from home that matches our focus letter. I do not use worksheets in my classroom. My classes are designed to allow for movement, singing, playing and a lot of repetitive practice of each skill.

Learning Goals

Students will develop 6 pre-reading skills. Every week we will focus on one letter of the alphabet. In addition to our focus letter, students will develop their skills in phonological awareness, letter knowledge, beginning writing, oral language and print awareness. These skills are developed through activities such as retelling a flannel board story, learning new vocabulary words, playing letter recognition games, practicing identifying beginning and ending sounds in words, and discovering rhyming words in poetry and nursery rhymes. We will also practice reading kindergarten sight words through group reading of simple sentences. Each child is provided time to answer questions during class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Shannon Elbo. I live in sunny Florida. I have my bachelor's degree in Exceptional Education K-12 from the University of Central Florida.
My professional life has been spent educating children ages three through twelve. My experience includes: exceptional education teacher, youth librarian for a large public library, lead
prekindergarten teacher and virtual ESOL teacher.
I love teaching children in person and virtually. My classes will be designed for the young learner. I am passionate about teaching young children the academic and social skills they will need for kindergarten. I will also design classes to help children of all ages to improve upon conversation skills. In these classes my students will engage in active listening and answering questions in complete sentences. My classes are filled with fun, laughter and singing. My classes are hands on because I believe children learn best when they are physically and mentally connected to the material they are learning. Children learn in diverse ways so I ensure that my classes include different styles of learning.
In my free time I love to spend time with my husband and two children. I enjoy going for walks and reading. I am so excited to teach your children on Outschool!
