Class Experience

**I’m currently on maternity leave for most of the summer, so I am not able to take enrollments at the moment. However, I am always available to respond to messages, and I am able to book classes for fall and winter of this year!

Hello learners and grownups!

In this one-time music theory/music reading class we pick up where the previous class leaves off.

(If your learner has not taken the first class it is recommended that they do so before taking this one. https://outschool.com/classes/reading-music-for-beginners-one-time-for-adolescents-cpGaG6Ew?usid=0UuhWEjL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link)

If they are already familiar with note values, the musical staff and reading notes in Treble Clef they may be able to skip the first class and start here.

In this Part 2 class we will be learning more about keys and scales, the Circle of Fifths, and reading key signatures. We will primarily focus on Major Scales but as time allows we will talk about Minors, Dorian, Mixolydian, and others.

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!

Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.

I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
