Description

Class Experience

Students will gain a better understanding of the structure of the English language. Each child will learn the tools they need to break unfamiliar words into smaller, familiar letter patterns. This knowledge will improve their ability to decode (sound out) and encode (spell) unfamiliar words, which will in turn lead to greater overall comprehension. They will become more confident in their reading skills, and lower the stress that a dyslexic student may experience everyday.
I am an Orton-Gillingham associate in training. I have five years of teaching experience both in the classroom and online. In January of 2020, I began to notice the severe need for proper, effective literacy instruction for children with dyslexia. I began my Orton-Gillingham training a few months later, and have fallen in love with the approach and the progress that I see in every one of my students. I currently teach 1:1 in a private tutoring center in Colorado, where I work both in-person and online with my students. I am thrilled to bring these highly effective teaching techniques to you and your learners, and can not wait to meet you!
There will be no assigned homework for this course. If you would like to continue to work with your learner between classes, I can provide some activities/advice to continue improving the skills we work on.
In order for students to get the most from the Orton-GIllingham approach, they will need:
- Tablet
       * This will allow students to read and write as they would on paper.

- Stylus (any kind)
      * Used for writing on the tablet.

- Explain Everything app (free)
      * This online whiteboard allows us to write and interact in real time.

During each session we will meet on Zoom and I will provide the code for that day's Explain Everything lesson. We will chat and interact via Zoom, but your learner will see the lesson pages on their tablet and we will practice reading and writing using the tablet.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
During our first sessions, I will conduct an informal assessment to gauge your learner's reading, writing, and spelling skills. From there, each lesson will move at the students pace. We will focus on a reading or spelling skill until it has been mastered before moving forward. This technique helps students to feel more successful and confident in their reading progress.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
