A parent or other adult will need to attend the class with the child to assist with writing the stories. In the first lesson, students will listen to a story read by the teacher. Then we will write our own class story based on the story read. At the end of the lesson the teacher will create a word doc of the story created by the children, and email it to the parents. In the second class, students will write individual stories with their parents help. The teacher will guide the process....
To gain self-confidence in reading and writing. To gain better print awareness.
I believe children learn best through play and fun. For thirty plus years I relied upon this knowledge to help young children learn. Kids want to read, but sometimes the mechanics seem overwhelming. Breaking reading down into bite-sized pieces where kids experience success, is the key to igniting a passion for reading and learning. I still have books my own children 'wrote' at this age!
Some parts of the course are designed as homework- copying and illustrating in particular.
1. Each Child should have lined paper (a first grade writing tablet) and crayons or markers in dark colors. 3. At the end of the course each child will have created a book he/she wrote (dictated). 4. Parents will receive a handout on how to bind and preserve their child's unique story.
Each child will end the class with a book he or she has written. Completion of all the steps will serve as the child's assessment. We are looking for skill development, confidence building, and accomplishment, not beautifully crafted materials.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
