Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 4
Are you wondering how to help your child grow as a reader? In this class, I will assess your child on their decoding and comprehension skills using a running record. During a running record assessment, a short book is presented on the screen. Your child will be asked to read the book aloud. I will be taking notes on their accuracy. Once they are finished with the book, I will also take notes on how well they comprehend the book. If your child's accuracy rate is at least 96% and they are able to answer 3 out of the 4 comprehension questions, they have reached their independent reading level. An additional class may need to be scheduled if your child needs to continue with their assessment. Some students need to read multiple books before an independent reading level is determined.
Running records specifically looks at a student's word reading accuracy, reading errors and self-corrects and utilization of reading strategies. An example of a reading strategy is the use of cueing systems - meaning, structure and visual. With meaning, a student would ask themselves "Does it go with the storyline and pictures?" With structure, a student woulda ask themselves "Does it sound right?" With visual, a student would ask themselves "Does it look right?" or "Does it match the letters I see on this page." By studying the way a student reads, we will be able to determine the best next steps.
Before this class, I will reach out to you to determine what level I should start the assessment at.

Hello, I am so excited for the opportunity to work with your child. As a new mom, I have decided to step away from the classroom but I wanted to continue to use my passion for teaching young students.

I graduated from the University of Hartford in 2014 after studying Elementary and Special Education. I received my Master’s in Special Education from Fordham University in 2016. I have been teaching full-time since 2014 in various grades - from Kindergarten to 3rd Grade. I have experience with remote teaching, so I will be able to create an engaging experience for your child during our virtual session.

While I do offer some small-group classes, my favorite thing to do on Outschool is 1:1 tutoring - both in ELA and Math. I love teaching foundational reading and math skills. For example, I enjoy guided reading lessons that teach students how to decode words and better comprehend the story. I also enjoy teaching sight words through games. In Math, I enjoy teaching all operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) through visuals and manipulatives. It is crucial that students understand the foundational skills so they are set up for future success.

Having classroom experience, I will be able to assess your child to see what their individual needs are and how to best support them. An example of an assessment would be a Running Record - which helps to determine your child’s reading level. I will communicate with you after each lesson and discuss the next steps we will work on to help your child succeed.

*Most of my tutoring schedule is done by request, so please send me a message and we can coordinate a time :)
