Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
Take the first step into reading with phonics! In this self-paced course, your student will learn basic letter sounds and how to blend simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with daily interaction and practice to help grow those early reading skills. This is a great class for young learners who know their alphabet and are ready to step into reading.

A self-paced course does not rely on live meetings but instead has videos, worksheets and other posts in the Outschool classroom. This is ideal for learning letter sounds because your child can practice as much as they need to as their schedule allows. In addition, every child can learn at their own pace.

Each day we will review the letters/sounds we will use in class, learn how to write each letter, identify words and sounds, build word ladders, identify onset and rhyming sounds, and practice simple blending and segmenting strategies. Your student will be engaged with fun activities including letter sorts, coloring, scavenger hunts, games and more!

MONDAY:
We will begin each week introducing the letter(s) and their sounds. We will identify words with the different letters/sounds and the individual sounds in the words. A simple tracing/coloring page will be included to help students review the sounds.

TUESDAY:
We will work together to build word ladders for the letters of the week and letters previously learned.

WEDNESDAY:
We will practice using the different letters/sounds in words and identifying the onset (beginning sound) and rhyme (ending sounds) of different words. This will include simple word/picture sorts to help with identifying these sounds.

THURSDAY:
We will practice simple blending and segmenting strategies to build a solid foundation for reading. We’ll complete a worksheet to help us identify the different sounds in the words we read.

FRIDAY:
Every Friday we will play a game to help review what we learned that week. This may include a scavenger hunt, bingo and more! Students can look forward to sharing what they did each week and will be able to post pictures to the classroom to show off what they learned!

⭐ Students should know all their letter names, have a general concept of sounds and be ready to start reading simple CVC words before joining this class. Please see my other listings for help with this.

⭐ Students will need play dough, crayons, paper, glue, scissors and printouts of the provided worksheets.

⭐ There are no live meetings for this class. Since there are no live meetings, you will be able to watch all the videos and complete all the activities on your own schedule.

⭐ You can post questions to the classroom or you can send me a private message any time. I try to respond to questions within 48 hours.

⭐ If you are not receiving emails about posts to the classroom after the first couple days in class, please check your emails SPAM folder. Often messages from Outschool end up there and get lost.
Learning Goals
