Description

Class Experience

Students will develop phonics, decoding, new vocabulary, and comprehension strategies that can be applied to new and challenging texts.
Hello, My name is Ms. Holmes I am a Colorado-certified special education teacher with K-12 licensure. I am a reading, math, and social-emotional interventionist teacher for neurodiverse students.
All materials and websites will be given out by the teacher via screen share, we will be using the following resources to practice our learned skills. Quizlet will be used for educational game practice to help learners to remember learned prefix and suffix work as well as gain class points. Youtube will be used for our read-aloud time for students to see examples of reading with our phonics strategies in mind as well as examples of good reading intonation and prosody. it will be presented through screen share with closed captioning as well. Youtube will also be used for student choice movement brain breaks. Prodigy English is a free and optional math and reading curriculum practice game in which students can gain extra math/reading practice based on common core standards outside of class time/ free time game option. Otherwise, a preview of the game will be shared through screen share. I will supply learners with login information.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
45 minutes per class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Daily read-aloud's will be shared via screen share through Youtube videos with closed captioning and they will vary depending on 1:1 age, learner area of need, phonics skills being targeted, and being inclusive of diverse learner backgrounds. As I will always be keeping the diversity of my learners at the forefront, for example, I may choose to include more books that are even more highly representative of my learner's heritage so that the learner feels a deeper inclusion in the reading process as readers of non-white backgrounds often struggle to find reading source examples in which they feel seen and included through the characters being represented in stories, especially as the main characters.
For example, with our Silent E pattern, learners that are in more need of the basics of the Silent e vowel patterns, we will be reading The Mighty Silent E by Kimberly Gard for our Silent E read-aloud. For learners that have a bit more of a basic phonics understanding, we may also choose to read Firebird by Misty Copland as this read-aloud is slightly higher level text vocabulary and also serves as an example for readers to be detectives and search for our Silent E phonics pattern as well as being a wonderful example of powerful black readers and writers.
