Beginner - Intermediate Level
The Lindamood Bell "Seeing Stars" and "Visualize Verbalize" programs are research based intensive intervention programs. They were designed for struggling learners who may have diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities, including dyslexia. Many students who could benefit from their programs are often unable due to the high cost. This intensive summer camp class offers the opportunity for your student to be able to access this level of intervention at a reasonable cost. This intensive beginner/intermediate summer reading workshop will be presented in live format utilizing the video and audio as we interact with each other throughout the class. Our 60 minute class will be divided into portions for our various skills; approximately 40 minutes for our "Seeing Stars" (decoding, phonemic awareness, spelling) skills and approximately 20 minutes for our "Visualize Verbalize" reading comprehension skills.
Learning Goals
The "Seeing Stars" portion of this class will target the following reading skills:
- Sequencing & recalling the order of letters while decoding and/or spelling
- The "Slient E" Rule
- Long vs. Short vowel sounds
- Spelling for vowel combinations: ai, ea, oa, ay, etc.
- Spelling for vowel combinations: oi, oy, ow, ou, aw, au
- Spelling for combinations: ar, er, ir
- Blending various consonant and vowel combinations
- Blending and fluency while reading
Students will learn the foundational skills of blending these combinations of letters, while exercising their "symbol imagery" (visual memory.)
The "Visualize Verbalize" portion of this class will target the following reading skills:
* Understanding what is read
* Answering both simple and more complex comprehension questions
* Answering comprehension questions related to drawing conclusions or making inferences
* Oral language comprehension and listening comprehension
* Applying verbal language skills to illustrations in order to practice visualizing skills.
* Practicing skills in describing an image or illustration

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a special education teacher for 25 years, I have been using the Lindamood Bell techniques for decoding, comprehension, and math. This class will use the "Seeing Stars" program which focuses on decoding skills as well as the "Visual Verbalize" program which focuses on comprehension skills. The Lindamood Bell method combines auditory, visual, and language skills for a comprehensive approach for the struggling learner. I have seen many struggling students make progress with these intervention tools.
