Class Experience

This bi-weekly class is designed for children reading in a range between middle-First (progressing toward) Second grade reading level. This class is often used as intervention for struggling readers, but I've also seen great success when used as enrichment for blooming readers. Reluctant readers welcome! I currently offer 4 levels of small group reading help-here are some general guidelines to determine if this section is a good fit for your learner:

Student has a good foundation of sight words, and can sound out simple words (dog, pig, sad, etc), as well as read words using "silent e". Your reader is learning to read two-syllable words, and longer sentences. Your child is a great candidate for this section if they are able to read (with some help) books leveled E-G (using a Scholastic scale) or I Can Read type readers. If your child is reading somewhere between a First and Second Grade level, they are a great fit! sample sentences: "Male lions roar loud at night. They are telling other lions and animals to stay away." NOTE: Your learner may jump into/out of this course at any time, all reading is within the same range (it will not get increasingly difficult each week).

In this class, we will use a variety of games and activities to practice/reinforce blending, spelling patterns, and decoding. This will act as a refresher/warm-up for our reading passage of the day. Each week we will begin a new reading passage, and practice it for the entire week. We will practice reading this together as a group, and children will each be given the chance to read aloud to the group. I love to encourage this from the beginning, and have seen amazing transformation with even the most reluctant reader! Confidence-building is at the core of each class, and students will have many opportunities to be encouraged (as well as practice being a great encourager!) Please bring a copy of the week's PDF story (uploaded to classroom upon enrollment) as well as a pencil, and colored pencils/crayons/highlighters in Red, Yellow, Green, Blue.

As a group, we will complete in-class story passage activities that incorporate grammar rules, comprehension work, sentence structure, spelling patterns and much more. These activities will reinforce the skills practiced throughout the lessons, and promote confidence as your child becomes familiar and comfortable with the story. Comprehension skills practiced include: problems/solutions, making inferences, finding the main idea, and evidence. I will assign daily reading practice (and a 10-15 minute independent story activity) each week, I've found students are eager to share their completed work with me (and progress nicely when they commit to regular practice).

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm Miss Michelle, and I'd love to share a little about my love for teaching, particularly reading/reading intervention. I'm a Reading Specialist, with over 20 years combined teaching and tutoring experience.

My love of reading began in childhood- as I poured over well-worn copies of the classics. My educational journey zig-zagged through many years of paid and volunteer teaching experience, including homeschooling 4 children, curriculum development, ESL teaching, Children's Director, tutoring, patient education (as a BSN) and much more. I opened an in-home learning center summer of 2020 to combat the learning gap so many children were experiencing. It was during this season that my skills converged. High quality, research-based curriculum became center stage of my program, with confidence-growth and high level engagement as the star of the show.

A parent once shared a Chinese proverb with me: "Interest is the best teacher". I found that engaged children learn more! They play, laugh, and interact. Learning (which may be hard work) should never feel like a punishment for not doing well.

When I'm not teaching, I love cooking, gardening, and being with the people of love. I love old music, plants, and my teen claims I'm a shameless random fact collector. Thank you for stopping by, please reach out with any questions you may have. I'd love an opportunity to help your child grow.
