Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. Students will receive practice in the following:
- Comprehension skills: summarizing, predicting, making connections, analyzing characters, inferencing, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, context clues, and drawing conclusions (fiction and nonfiction text)
- Grammar: contractions, plurals, adjectives, nouns, suffixes, conjunctions, pronouns, verbs, and homophones
- Vocabulary: words found in-text to help build comprehension

Common Core Standards
Students will:
- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.3; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3; & CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.5.3)
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3.4; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.4; & CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.5.4)
As a classroom teacher, I have helped students who were below grade level improve their fluency and comprehension skills. I currently use a similar program with my tutoring students who have not only showed improvement in reading but have become more confident in their abilities as well.
Reading may be assigned for practice. All passages range from approximately 200 - 300 words.
 2 files available upon enrollment
I will screen share all reading materials used in the course. I will provide links to Nearpod and Google Slides where appropriate and when used, as well as upload files for parents and students. Printed copies of passages are highly recommended. I also recommend colored pencils, pens, or crayons for students to have on hand.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher will informally assess fluency and comprehension through classroom participation.
