Is your child struggling with reading? Maybe your child is not feeling confident in their reading abilities or they want to accelerate their learning. This class can help! In this class I will provide strategies and tools to improve foundational skills needed to be successful in reading. Learners need to feel confident to take academic risk in order to make growth in their learning. I believe in meeting learners at their current academic level and providing an encouraging learning environment to facilitate meaningful learning. Through a variety of interactive activities (slides, games and discussion) students will build their understanding of foundational skills needed to be successful in reading. We will focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, accuracy and fluency strategies. Learners should come to class with paper and pencil or whiteboard. Areas of focus: Phonics- CVC and CVCE words, vowel teams, word parts, soft and hard C and G, double consonant, silent consonant, blends, digraphs and trigraphs. Phonemic awareness- Manipulating beginning, middle and ending phonemes, rhyming, and syllable work. Accuracy- Strategies to improve accuracy and self monitoring while reading. Fluency- Strategies to improve fluency. (examples: scooping, high frequency word practice) Comprehension- Strategies to improve comprehension (examples: stop and jot, ask questions while you read...) Class Structure: Warm up: Building words by manipulating phonemes followed by a phonemic awareness activity. Mini lesson: Skill focus of the day. Guided Practice: Work as a group to practice new strategy.
