Reading in French: Apprendre à Lire en Français, Module 5
Class experience
version française disponible sur demande; SVP m'écrire un message, lien ci-dessous.] This course is a full semester program of twelve or (preferably) eighteen weeks. For convenience in payment and scheduling I have divided it into six-week modules; however to gain full benefit you need to re-register for the following modules for the full semester and for best results, for two semesters / a full school year of at least 32 to 36 weeks. **This is Module 5 out of 6 modules for the first year**...
This class is taught in French.
Module 5: In Modules 1to 4 students have learned the basic French vowels and continuant consonants and now the stop consonants plus the variant "short e" vowel in three forms, Ratus text Units 1 to 4 Lessons 1 to 25.. We have worked on pronunciation, visual recognition, auditory recognition of words containing the target letters and sounds, and writing each letter. We have practiced fairly extensively reading French syllables and breaking words into syllables of various types (consonant vowel, vowel-consonant, consonant-vowel-consonant, single vowel) At this point students can read a great deal in French. We have practiced reading and writing many common high-frequency words and simple sentences, distinguishing letters and words, writing simple sentences, and discussing stories and pictures. We have started a few small dictees (sentence and paragraph dictation, for spelling and grammar.) Module 5 now follows and continues this work with more complicated patterns on French phonics, silent letters ent in verbs, h, nasalized vowels an, am, en, em, in, im, un; consonant combinations ph = f, gn [a sound not heard in English], vowel combinatation au = o, eau = o, and the "dropped" vowels eu and oeu, two sojunds of s, plus z, and syllables made by combining these sounds, more high-frequency vocabulary, longer sentences, and true-false comprehension questions based on the humourous Ratus stories and cartoons. We will finish Ratus text unit 5, Lessons 26 to 31. We will also do exercises from other series practicing syllables in more depth and extending French vocabulary. Later, Module 6 and year 2 units will follow, continuing the same pattern. Module 6 will cover Ratus unit 6 including ai = short e plus consonant blends (pr, cl, st etc.) and much more vocabulary including these sounds.. Week 1: Lessons 26 and 27, gn and silent letters, in, im, and syllables, stories and true-false questions, writing Week 2: Finish Lesson 27 as above. Week 3: Lessons 28 and 29, an, am, en, em, z and s=z, more reading and vocabulary and writing Week 4: Finish Lesson 29, as above. Week 5: Lessons 30 and 31, ph=f, au, eau , vocabulary and reading and writing. Week 6, Lessson 32 eu, oeu . Catch up, practice, and, review of work to this point..
I speak French fluently and have lived in Montreal and area for a long time. I've taught and tutored a large number of students to read in French, using high-quality well-known materials that are aligned with the science of reading. I have a BSc, a BA in Honours Math and a double major in Languages and Linguistics, and an MA in Education. I taught in French first-language schools for four years, and have taught a number of classes in French as a second language. I also have extensive experience in teaching and tutoring reading in both English and French, and all of my reading students have succeeded in learning to read fluently.
Homework Offered
If parents speak French, they may choose to re-read the lesson with theor child. This is enjoyable and a great review. Please don't work ahead since we want the students to enjoy the story together, not be bored already. Parents can stream kids' TV in French. There is a French version of Sesame Street and there are many other cartoons.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The class is interactive and students are in constant communication with the teacher. Assessment is continuous and ongoing. A certificate of achievement can be prepared on request.Grades Offered
Each student must have a microphone and camera and keep them open so we can keep verbal and visual communication going. This is a class using constant interaction so these are essential. The student needs a relatively quiet place to work and a good table to write on -- writing lying on the floor is not acceptable. **Please note: Laptop microphones pick up all conversations in the room. If you are talking off camera the whole class hears you and not the lesson. We also hear cooking and clanking dishes. For your own privacy and the best class experience, it's best to either do a quiet activity or put the student in a separate room. A small whiteboard and wipe-off markers are very helpful, Students need a notebook or notebooks preferably with primary lines (wide lines with a dotted line in the middle); plus several fine markers or gel pens which work smoothly without too much pressure, so fluid writing can be practiced. (pencil is impossible to see and leaning on pencils is bad for the hands so I recommend pens and markers.) ** Students should obtain the reading text "Ratus et ses amis" and the three associated workbooks (one white, two green) if at all possible. It is important for the student to have ownership of the text and to be able to write in the books, and we respect copyright. These books are good for the entire school year and part of the next (depending on the student's learning speed) so although they are a fairly large investment, it's an investment that will pay back for more than a year to come. Links attached below. I will assess the students during the first week of class and if extra work seems needed we can also try to obtain copies of "Je Lis, J'écris" 1 and 2 and the associated workbooks. As needed we may do a little extra work from "Méthode de lecture pas a pas" and other fundamental reading guides in French.(do not order until needs are assessed.) During the emergency I can provide some copies on a temporary basis but we should try to get the books as soon as feasible. ****************************************************************************************************************** Text and learning material: PLEASE OBTAIN: "Ratus et ses amis" plus workbooks (one white, two green) This text may be obtained from some bookstores; you may try Renaud-Bray, or ask Chapters / Indigo / Barnes and Noble (note that French books are listed on the computer separately from English, and you will need a knowledgeable salesclerk to open the French site) or you may be lucky enough to find a used copy on ebay. Used workbooks of course will not be helpful. For convenience, I am supplying the listings from Amazon. I do not work for Amazon nor do I earn anything from providing this reference.
