1-2 hours per week. Students can now read in French and should be encouraged to read library or other books as available. There is a series of Ratus Poche; which you can buy, although expensive, or try to get your library to obtain some. Students can now easily manage the yellow level (age 6 to 7 in French schools) and may want to try the red level (age 7 to 8 in French schools.)Assessment
The class is interactive and students are in constant communication with the teacher. Assessment is continuous and ongoing. A certificate of achievement can be prepared on request.Class Experience
[version française disponible sur demande; SVP m'écrire un message, lien ci-dessous.] This course is a full two semester program of twelve or (preferably) sixteen weeks. For convenience in payment and scheduling I have divided it into four or six-week modules; however to gain full benefit you need to re-register for the following modules for the full semester and for best results, for two semesters / a full school year of at least 32 to 36 weeks. **This is Module 6 out of 8 modules** We are two-thirds through the year's program for French first language; at the end of the year in second language immersion. Or, this class can be used as extra help in Grade 2, followed by the Grade 2 units. This is a first-language program used in France; we are ahead of what is done in Grade 1 in most US and Canadian immersion classes. Kids are now reading very well and having fun! Please be sure to check the prerequisites below and choose the right level for your child. Too high or too low a level can be frustrating. I may have to move a child to a different level if one is a bad match. I will work with an individual student or, if more students at the same level arrive, in a very small group of no more than six, so every student will get extensive individual attention. **Prerequisite: Students *must* have at least a basic knowledge of French, at a minimum successful completion of French Immersion kindergarten and ability to hold simple conversations in the French language. ** Prerequisite: At this point, almost through the year, students are readers. Starting Module 6, students should have a good grasp on the topics covered in Modules 1,to 5, which include the vowels a, e, i, o, u, é, ou and oi; è and ê and e##, plus on; the consonants f, s, v, j, ch, m;, r, l, n, plus p. t, d, g, b, the combinations gn and ph and the nasal vowels an, en, in, on, un, plus au and eau, eu and oeu; combining these sounds into syllables of two to four sounds; and up to a hundred common function words such as est, un, une, et, pour, de, qui, mais, comme, ne pas, en, que, je, pas, par, etc. They should be able to read little stories of five to ten sentences, and respond to simple questions. By this point students will be reading basic material with very little help. In the class, we learn French phonics, the 36 French phonemes -- about six per module in the first six modules -- and the most common spellings of each, French syllables, plus vocabulary, and sentence structure. We read a short humorous story from a textbook, answer oral questions about the content, discuss the topic and the illustration and the silly jokes and cartoons, practice letter formation and writing of words, and do workbook exercises covering all of these topics. The course is developmental, starting with single letters and a few common words, moving up towards fluency and independence in French reading at an age and grade appropriate level by the end of a year's course. The course speed is dependent on student needs and will vary highly depending on age, prior education and experience, prior French vocabulary, and any problems such as dyslexia. Exact predictions are impossible, but the average student can finish most of the Ratus text, aiming at approximately 36 lessons, and be quite independent in reading within one school year at age six or seven. Please note: Immersion students who do not get other opportunities to speak French will need to take longer on vocabulary and structure. This is perfectly fine; it just means we will progress through the material at a slower pace, taking time to work on comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. Students may register in a module twice if we are still working through it.
Learning Goals
Module 6:
In Modules 1to 5 students have learned the essentials of the French sound-symbol system and can read most words they see, Ratus text Units 1 to 5 Lessons 1 to 31. We have worked on pronunciation, visual recognition, auditory recognition of words containing the target letters and sounds, and writing each letter. We have practiced fairly extensively reading French syllables and breaking words into syllables of various types (consonant vowel, vowel-consonant, consonant-vowel-consonant, single vowel) At this point students are readers and now we are refining the details.
We have practiced reading and writing many common high-frequency words and simple sentences, distinguishing letters and words, writing simple sentences, and discussing stories and pictures. We have started a few small dictees (sentence and paragraph dictation, for spelling and grammar.)
Module 6 now follows and continues this work with more complicated patterns on French phonics, alternate spellings for short e, consonant blends, vowel blends, qu and gu, and syllables made by combining these sounds, more high-frequency vocabulary, longer sentences, and true-false comprehension questions based on the humourous Ratus stories and cartoons. We will finish Ratus text unit 6, Lessons 32 to 38. We will also do exercises from other series practicing syllables in more depth and extending French vocabulary.
Later -- end Grade 1 for first language, Grade 2 for second language -- Modules 7 and 8 will follow, continuing the same pattern. Module 7 will cover Ratus unit 7 including alternate sounds of c and g, when and when not to pronounce n, and other advanced topics
Week 1: Lessons 32 and 33,ai, ei, e##, and syllables, stories and true-false questions, writing
Week 2: Lessons 33 and 34, consonant blends, more reading and vocabulary and writing
Week 3: Lessons 35 and 36, consonant blends , vocabulary and reading and writing.
Week 4, Lessons 36 and 37 syllables ending r and l.
Week 5: Lesson 38, qu and gu
Week 6: Catch up, practice, and, review of work to this point..

Supply List
Each student must have a microphone and camera and keep them open so we can keep verbal and visual communication going. This is a class using constant interaction so these are essential. The student needs a relatively quiet place to work and a good table to write on -- writing lying on the floor is not acceptable. **Please note: Laptop microphones pick up all conversations in the room. If you are talking off camera the whole class hears you and not the lesson. We also hear cooking and clanking dishes. For your own privacy and the best class experience, it's best to either do a quiet activity or put the student in a separate room. A small whiteboard and wipe-off markers are very helpful, Students need a notebook or notebooks preferably with primary lines (wide lines with a dotted line in the middle); plus several fine markers or gel pens which work smoothly without too much pressure, so fluid writing can be practiced. (pencil is impossible to see and leaning on pencils is bad for the hands so I recommend pens and markers.) ** Students should obtain the reading text "Ratus et ses amis" and the three associated workbooks (one white, two green) if at all possible. It is important for the student to have ownership of the text and to be able to write in the books, and we respect copyright. These books are good for the entire school year and part of the next (depending on the student's learning speed) so although they are a fairly large investment, it's an investment that will pay back for more than a year to come. Links attached below. I will assess the students during the first week of class and if extra work seems needed we can also try to obtain copies of "Je Lis, J'écris" 1 and 2 and the associated workbooks. As needed we may do a little extra work from "Méthode de lecture pas a pas" and other fundamental reading guides in French.(do not order until needs are assessed.) During the emergency I can provide some copies on a temporary basis but we should try to get the books as soon as feasible. ****************************************************************************************************************** Text and learning material: PLEASE OBTAIN: "Ratus et ses amis" plus workbooks (one white, two green -- for Module 6 we are well into thesecond green workbook) This text may be obtained from some bookstores; you may try Renaud-Bray, or ask Chapters / Indigo / Barnes and Noble (note that French books are listed on the computer separately from English, and you will need a knowledgeable salesclerk to open the French site) or you may be lucky enough to find a used copy on ebay. Used workbooks of course will not be helpful. For convenience, I am supplying the listings from Amazon. I do not work for Amazon nor do I earn anything from providing this reference.
