Reading Help/Phonics Instruction: Consonant Blends and Short Vowel Sounds/CCVC Words
In this 4-week class, students will work with consonant blends and short vowel letter sounds, as well as practice with consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant (CCVC) words. Both native English speakers and English language learners are welcome.

Systematic, explicit phonics instruction will be utilized to teach and review consonant blends and short vowel letters. A consonant blend is when two consonants come together, and each makes its own sound. The vowel letters are Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, and Uu. Consonant S-blends are consonant blends that contain the letter Ss, consonant L-blends are consonant blends that contain the letter Ll, and consonant R-blends are consonant blends that contain the letter Rr. This class is taught in English.
Each week, learners will get familiar with a specific group of letters and letter combinations and then practice putting them into four-letter words. Week 1: S-blends and the five vowel letters; Week 2: L-blends and the five vowel letters; Week 3: R-blends and the five vowel letters; Week 4: Review S, L, and R-blends and the five vowel letters. Each week will build upon the prior week's skills.
A one-page review activity sheet will be provided at the end of each session.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Formative assessment will be utilized throughout each lesson to determine learner progress.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
