Reading Foundations: Exposing Those Pesky Gaps! What will be taught? This is a diagnostic pre-assessment course, a pivotal cornerstone for my subsequent lessons, and a prerequisite to any course in the “Reading Foundations” series I offer. My purpose for this class: If I don’t know where to begin, it is like trying to mend a net without knowing where the holes are. If holes exist, I will lose valuable time, fish, and interest in the task. Kids and even adults react the same way, so it is vital to pinpoint where to begin. I can assist your child in finding that gap and filling it before they lose their valuable interest and love of learning and reading. What topics will the class cover? The topics covered will be assessing their skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, spelling, penmanship, vocabulary, and basic comprehension. How is your class structured? 5 minutes: An icebreaker game or activity that will allow us to get to know one another. 5 min. After this game, I will introduce the structure of the hour together. 30-40 minutes (assessment) This is where I will begin assessing the student. Based on the phonics survey, I will adjust the assessment process to provide the most efficient route to a more comprehensive assessment result. (mini breaks as needed) Last 10 minutes: Students will be able to complete the session with a game that will double as an informal assessment tool while they play. How will I teach? I will teach using a teacher-made video, other YouTube videos, Kahoot, Nearpod, Gimkit, and my document camera (used for showing realia, resources for the lesson, and other materials needed to be projected to the meeting). Different programs or materials may be used now or in the future. What is my teaching style? Progressive Model Instruction Classroom, Teachable Moments, and Scaffolding (instructional model where the teacher is slowly reducing the support and assistance with the skill or task as the student becomes more proficient) or, in other words, one skill builds upon another skill as they become more proficient. I also use strategies to help English learners who require a more visual and lower level of language acquisition to access content and skills in the lessons. In addition, I utilize various classroom-inclusive and practical strategies to provide the best learning environment possible for students with special needs and/or learning deficits. Discourse, multiple modalities, and flexibility are significant strengths in my teaching style. How much will learners get to interact with me? Youtube videos Paper and Pencil/White Board and Marker and document camera Discussion Slides (Google) Nearpod Games (Gimkit, Kahoot, and teacher-made games)
